Sunnyside CSA FAQ

Here are answers to some common questions:

When and where can I pick up my share?
On Thursdays between the hours of 5 and 8pm at Sunnyside Community Services (43-31 39th Street between 43rd Ave and Queens Blvd, View Map).

What happens if I don't pick up my share?
If you'll be away and can't pick up your share, you may have someone else pick it up for you. If a box isn't picked up during the distribution time, it will be donated to a local charity.

How do I know that the produce is organic?
We partner with The Golden Earthworm Organic Farm, LLC, which is certified by a third-party certifier, NOFA-NY Certified Organic, LLC. The use of synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides is prohibited in Certified Organic Production. You can find out more about Golden Earthworm here and about the certification process here.

How much produce will I get each week?
There are between 6 and 10 items in the box each week. During the summer and autumn months, the shares are much fuller than during the first few weeks in the spring. If you are a large family eating a primarily vegetarian diet, you might consider ordering more than one full share. If you are single, you might want to split a share with another member.

What types of vegetables can I expect to find in my share?
It depends on the season. Please see the Produce list page.

What if I don't like some of the vegetables we get?
We will have a "Produce Exchange Box" on site during the pick-up hours. Put in the vegetable you don't want, and take a different type to replace it from the box.

How long will these vegetables last? How do I store them?
Please see our Storage Tips.  We will provide a newsletter every week with tips and recipes, as well.

What if a full share is too much for me?
We encourage our members to split a share with a friend. If you and a friend choose to split a share, please let us know on your sign up from. If none of your friends want to share with you, we can help! Just let us know you’re looking for a someone to split a share with and we’ll try to match you up with someone. (Please Note: We limit ourselves to letting people know of others interested in sharing. You are responsible for working out details yourselves and resolving any differences you may have on your own.)

What if I can't afford the full share price?
Our CSA raises money to subsidize a small number of shares for households with limited income. Please download the subsidized share contract to see if you qualify. (Espanol)

What's involved with volunteering?
In order to keep our group running, we ask each member to give a minimum of four hours of their time to the CSA during the year. Volunteer shifts will be 4:30 - 6:30 pm (to allow for setup) and 6:30 - 8:30 pm (to allow for break down). Please see our Volunteer Signup page for more information.
